Misadventures of the Accidental Housewife

So having been off work for over a month now, I am learning more about being a housewife. I still hate cooking but as they say in Singlish, "got to do it lor." I also had my first experience with furniture delivery yesterday.

For the last few weeks, I have been looking for a nice armchair to join our three-seater chocolate brown sofa. I have come to discover that this is a nation of armchair lovers. Shops charge an average of £600 to £1,200 (no, that's not a typo) for a simple fabric chair. Even 'cheap' ones cost at least £250 and those are UGLEEEE!

I've looked on ebay and even prices there are shocking. People think nothing of dropping a few hundred quid on something to sit on. And antique pieces? Well the sky is the limit. After being unsuccessful at bidding on two chairs, I finally won a second-hand Laura Ashley one. The seller delivered it to me yesterday morning and I gasped in shock, it was HUGE! That's when the fun really began.

The seller was nice enough to help me carry it to the house, but for the life of us we couldn't maneuver it through the doorway. This property has a very strange narrow entrance at the side of the house, which is also restricted by the fence separating us from the neighbour. As the seller had an operation for a bad hip last year, she went on her merry way with the chair stuck in the entrance.

I realized that the only way I could get that chair into the house was to take the front door off. It then started to drizzle and I had to drape a black garbage bag over the chair. After unscrewing for what felt like hours, I finally got the front door off and propped it on our narrow staircase. The problem now was that the door was blocking my way into the living room where the chair needed to go! Groan.

The door was too heavy to bring all the way up the stairs, but I pulled it up a few steps, using the lock as a 'hook' to keep the door holding on precariously.

By taking off the wooden front legs of the chair, I finally managed to get it into the living room. Phew. I sat on its plush cushions and it did not disappoint: comfy!

However, the problem now was that our front door was still on the stairs and was too heavy for me to put back on. I carefully slid the door down and propped it against the frame. However, that meant I couldn't go out because it wasn't safe to leave the house 'unlocked' so to speak ha ha.

We did not have a front door the whole afternoon. I had to help P put it back on when he came home from work. He did this grudgingly as he was still in pain from a bike fall late last week hee.

Anyway, I must admit the chair looks lovely and I'm attaching a photo for you to admire. I sat on it for most of yesterday evening and well, it's just so me.

My stuff from the Small Island will be delivered on Thursday, so I will try and post photos of the inside of our house this weekend. Until the next post, have a great one people!
